Privacy Statement
INTERVENTION
2013

A collaboration with Elke Uitentuis en Wouter Osterholt.

The photos are taken during the exhibition Zoetermeer Utopia at Stadsmuseum Zoetermeer.

The public space of Zoetermeer city center is no public space at all. The city center was the last neighborhood to be built to the planned-from-the-ground-up town of Zoetermeer, and it is mostly shopping centers. It is owned by a private company, which is responsible for maintenance and surveillance.
Privacy Statement is a semi-legal installation of traffic signs and CCTV-cameras, that parasite onto lampposts and that have an encrypted connection to the free/public WIFI. Sending your image from the streets to your phone, Privacy Statement crosses the border between one highly contested public space to the other. All passersby are invited to a free-of-charge virtual self-defense course organized by Douwe Schmidt and Lonneke van der Velden.
