Privacy Statement
INTERVENTION IN PUBLIC SPACE
2013

A collaboration with Elke Uitentuis and Wouter Osterholt.

The photos are taken during the exhibition Zoetermeer Utopia at Stadsmuseum Zoetermeer, cocurated by the International New Town Institute.

The public space of Zoetermeer’s city center is not a public space at all. It is owned by a private company, which is responsible for maintenance and surveillance.
Privacy Statement is a semi-legal installation of traffic signs and CCTV-cameras, which parasitizes lampposts for electricity and which connects to the ‘public’ WIFI by encryption. By sending your image from the street to your phone, Privacy Statement crosses the border between one highly contested public space and another.
All passersby are invited to a free-of-charge virtual self-defense course organized by Douwe Schmidt and Lonneke van der Velden.
